Product updates
Changelog
Social preview and SEO foundation added
Added the supplied 1200 × 630 Open Graph image with descriptive alt text and reused it for large Twitter cards. Centralized the production URL, titles, descriptions, and social metadata; added route-specific canonicals for the app, Privacy Policy, and Terms of Service; and expanded crawler directives with large-image previews.
Added WebSite and WebApplication JSON-LD for the homepage, a web app manifest using the existing app icons, and a canonical host in
robots.txt. The sitemap now uses the shared production URL and stable last-modified dates rather than changing the homepage timestamp on every build.In-app changelog drawer added
Added a Changelog drawer generated directly from this progress log, keeping
progress.mdas the single source of truth for product updates. The drawer adapts Osmo Supply's step-by-step timeline to the Color Shift visual system, preserves the animated progress line and numbered marker states, and keeps every entry at full opacity while scrolling. Reduced-motion visitors see the timeline in its completed state.Linked the drawer from both desktop and mobile footers and kept the Markdown parsing on the server so the browser only receives the small GSAP timeline controller.
Phase 8 implementation complete; release awaiting Unsplash approval
Phase 7 is complete. ColorFields, score thresholds, and Export animate real box dimensions with easeOutQuart, using 0.3s enter and 0.25s exit timing. Text, swatches, borders, and editor controls retain their natural geometry throughout the transition.
Phase 8 implementation is complete. CI, production dependency hardening, the dropped responsive-easing cleanup, README and testing documentation, privacy/terms routes, and spec reconciliation are done. Final interface polish added file-based Next.js app icons (
favicon.ico,icon.svg, andapple-icon.png) and updated the Contrast Result light palette from Figma across Good, Bad, and Meh states, including distinct divider, threshold, selected-pill, and metadata colors while preserving the dark palette. The Unsplash production-access application was submitted on 2026-10-11. Approval is the only remaining Phase 8 release dependency and is external to the implementation; record the approval date in
docs/phase-8-release-checklist.mdwhen Unsplash responds.Closeout validation passed: lint, deterministic tests, TypeScript through
npx next build --webpack, the production dependency audit, and every production-capable Chrome suite run sequentially against the build. The development-only DialKit suite passed separately againstnext dev. The final favicon and Contrast Result pass also passed lint, deterministic tests, a webpack production build, and visual verification against Figma node3359:1577in the local Light UI. The Phase 5 regression now covers stable editor ownership during pending theme-aware Space generation and footer-portal replacement during mobile breakpoint re-entry; no browser console errors were reported.Phase 8 scope and dependency security follow-up
John dropped Plan 006 continuous breakpoint easing and confirmed that physical-device testing has been performed throughout the project. The dedicated breakpoint Flip hook, markers, and tests were removed; the separate Phase 7 animations remain. The device log records John's confirmation without inventing device models, versions, or screenshots.
The browser palette extractor now assembles Vibrant's browser-only pipeline directly, removing
node-vibrantand its unused Node/Jimp dependency chain. The six shadcn CSS variants actually used by the app were moved locally, allowing removal of theshadcnCLI.npm audit --omit=devreports zero findings; the full audit has five high findings from the development-only Next ESLint/braces chain. The braces advisory has no patched release. CI now enforces the production audit. Seedocs/phase-8-release-checklist.mdfor the risk decision and validation status.Validation passed: lint, deterministic tests, TypeScript, webpack production build, production dependency audit, and Chrome themed-photo, Phase 5, Phase 6, Phase 7 and Unsplash tracking suites. The default local Turbopack build still encounters the environment's process/port restriction; PR CI will test that build in GitHub's runner.
Phase 8 hardening started
Started Phase 8 on
codex/phase-8-hardening. Added CI for lint, Next type generation, TypeScript, build and deterministic tests; addednpm testand replaced the boilerplate README. Added a reusable device/browser log with the limited historical user-reported result, and reconciled the URL, font, contrast-search and APCA-label spec drift. The Unsplash API key remains server-side. Photo responses now retain
download_location; successful copy and Markdown download actions send a tracking request through a validated server route. API errors distinguish exhausted quota from other failures, and the client retries one transient 502. A live authenticated call returned HTTP 200 with a 50/hour limit, confirming Demo access; earlier 403 causes were not logged in enough detail to prove each case. Production access application text and remaining steps are indocs/phase-8-release-checklist.md.The guideline review found that the full Unsplash image still passed through Next image optimization. Changed it to load the original Unsplash URL directly with
unoptimized, matching the already-direct tiny placeholder. The focused Chrome tracking suite now checks that the displayed full-imagesrcremains the Unsplash URL.download_locationis an event count for explicit use of the photo-derived color export; the app does not offer an image-file download.Updated Next, React, Radix and compatible packages; removed unused
lucide-react. Restoredmotionandshadcnafter builds exposed their runtime/CSS use.npm audit fixleaves 14 alerts (9 high, 5 moderate) in tool and node-vibrant dependency chains; risk and upstream limitations are documented in the release checklist. Lint, deterministic tests, Next typegen, TypeScript and a clean Turbopack production build pass. Chrome themed-photo, Phase 5, Phase 6 and focused tracking suites pass with no browser errors. Phase 5 fixtures were updated for automatic 502 retry and the obsolete shuffle-pending-unmount case was removed because photo selection now prepares the palette before switching. Plan 006 decision, physical-device retest, CI activation, deployment/live tracking confirmation and the Unsplash application remain open.Corrected Light format text and theme-directed generation
The user corrected selected-format text from #171717 to #EDEDED. Applied a dedicated selected-text token and scoped active-tab rule so the generic hover color cannot override it. Other Light text colors and the #2E2E2E pill background remain.
Added theme-directed Random/Space generation. A single request gets four Unsplash candidates using the existing abstract queries with theme hints. Client sampling selects the brightest/darkest valid thumbnail; failed decoding/CORS falls back to color metadata only when no valid samples are available, with a bounded sampling deadline. Theme-directed OKLCH tones preserve hues and guarantee light/dark polarity with WCAG contrast at least 4.5:1. The current photo, edits and history are preserved on theme changes. Selection/palette creation reads the latest visible theme after asynchronous work. Initial buffer navigation and local imports retain their existing behavior.
Validation: lint and webpack production build/TypeScript pass. Two deterministic suites validate 162 pairs and API query/parameter behavior. Chrome themed-photos, ui-annotations and Phase 7 suites pass: actual pixels vs misleading metadata, valid-thumbnail priority/fallback, desktop/mobile, in-flight theme changes, click/Space parity, history and EDEDED under hover. Live local-API calls returned HTTP 200 with four Unsplash photos in both Light and Dark. Photography brightness remains a preference among candidates; palette polarity/contrast is enforced.
Boxed shortcut tooltips, Fix/Export shortcuts and editor colors
Applied Figma 3396:988 to shortcut tooltips: 1px bordered boxes, 4px radius, 2px padding, Geist 13px/16px and 16px Phosphor Command/Control/arrows. Undo and Export adapt modifiers to the platform; keys and modifiers share one box. Preserved accessible button labels and added aria-keyshortcuts.
Added F for available Fix contrast and Cmd/Ctrl+S to open export using existing action/motion paths. Repeats do not re-trigger the action. F is protected while typing; modified S preserves the specimen text and focuses COPY, including from text editing. Channel/readout inputs now have transparent backgrounds. Light selected format uses #2E2E2E and ds/gray/1000 (#171717, verified via Figma variables); Dark selected-format styling is preserved.
Validation: lint and webpack production build with TypeScript pass. Seven Chrome suites exit 0: action-shortcuts, ui-annotations, theme-wipe, phase7-browser, phase5-browser, score-description and specimen-caret. Covered keyboard/click parity, platform modifier icons, exact tooltip/color tokens, native text replacement/selection, responsive geometry/mobile reveal, animation interruption, reduced motion and API/storage fallbacks. Screenshots in /tmp/color-shift-tooltip-*, /tmp/color-shift-editor-light.png and /tmp/color-shift-specimen-caret. Physical IME/device behavior is not part of this simulated browser validation.
Description wrapping, keyboard animation parity and shortcuts
The user requested smooth one/two-line score-description changes, the same animations for keyboard and pointer actions, a theme tooltip advertising T, and the complete shortcut list. Added a measured 200ms description-height transition with shared States easing, interruption/cleanup, reduced-motion settling and mobile reveal frame notifications. Development DialKit exposes Score Description → Duration Ms.
Removed the theme-specific keyboard animation bypass. T and keyboard activation of the theme pills now use the same directional wipe as clicking; T also works with theme controls focused and ignores repeat keydown events. Text-field and browser-modifier protection remain. Other action shortcuts already use their common click/action handlers. Added the tooltip, aria-keyshortcuts and specs-context/keyboard-shortcuts.md. The explicit keyboard preference supersedes the animation skills’ keyboard rule and the earlier motion-review recommendation.
Figma specimen caret and final motion opportunities
The user requested an insertion point at the end when entering specimen editing and a wider caret matching Figma 3416:366. Retained native textarea input/selection and added a decorative caret measured in an identical hidden text layout. Width and height use the Figma 14/240 and 202/240 font-size ratios. First activation/focus moves to the end; subsequent placement, range selection and navigation remain native. Composition/forced-colors use the native caret; reduced motion disables blinking. Empty focused text no longer shows the Aa placeholder behind the caret.
The Phase 7 PR had already been merged, including the real-resize ColorField update (#9). This follow-up starts from current main on codex/phase-7-specimen-caret. A read-only animation sweep proposes subtle image error-banner entry/exit; the initial motion review flagged keyboard-initiated sidebar motion; the user’s subsequent request supersedes that recommendation. No additional effect was implemented from these proposals. Details are in plan/phase-7-motion-review.md.
Validation: lint and TypeScript/webpack build; dedicated Chrome caret regression across desktop/tablet/mobile sizes, selection, wrapping/emoji/empty text, synthetic composition, forced colors and reduced motion. Saved screenshots in /tmp/color-shift-specimen-caret.
Destination-specific theme wipe and sidebar state motion
The user requested Dark left → right and Light right → left plus an editable easing selector in DialKit. The wipe now derives its direction from the destination theme. The completed sidebar implementation uses real box resizing with easeOutQuart (GSAP power3.out) for ColorFields, score thresholds, and Export. Development States → Easing can select alternate curves through
--sidebar-easing; the product default remains easeOutQuart with 0.3s enter and 0.25s exit timing.Mobile reveal follows cs:layout-motion frames and retains its manual wheel/touch and input-focus cancellation. Interrupted timelines, inert exit copies and temporary styles clean up on settlement, resize and reduced motion. The archived curtain branch remains available.
Validation: lint and the final webpack build/TypeScript pass. Chrome theme-wipe, Phase 7 and complete Phase 5/mobile-reveal suites pass with no console errors. Development DialKit verification selects quartic/linear easing, measures the rendered curves for fields and score, and confirms persistence after reload. Added that development regression as tests/motion-devtools.browser.cjs.
Curtain archived; horizontal theme wipe selected
The user approved the curtain for future reuse, requested a separate branch, and supplied a replacement 21st.dev horizontal wipe. Saved the complete curtain implementation locally as
codex/theme-curtainat4ac7b422a326, preserving the active checkout and its index. That branch includes the component, tuning and regression suite; the active branch remainscodex/phase-7.Replaced the active curtain with native View Transition snapshots and left-to-right clip-path reveal: 700ms, ease-in-out, adjustable through Theme Wipe → Duration Ms. Existing theme pills, persistence and previous browser-review corrections remain. Added synchronous theme subscriber notification for React snapshot consistency, guards for skipped/stale update callbacks, snapshot cleanup and immediate fallback for keyboard, reduced motion or unsupported APIs.
Validation: lint, TypeScript/webpack build, deterministic theme tests, the dedicated Chrome wipe suite, Phase 7 and the full Phase 5/mobile-reveal regression pass with no browser console errors. Development localhost:3000 confirms Theme Wipe → Duration Ms = 700 and the 0.7s root property. The browser suite covers clip direction/timing, snapshot selection state, cancelled callbacks, preserved work/focus, reduced motion, keyboard, external storage, resize and API/storage fallbacks. Native snapshots temporarily suspend hit-testing of captured participants; the interruption check dispatches an already-observed theme request during a paused snapshot.
Theme curtain integrated after browser corrections
Adapted the user-supplied 21st.dev animation into the existing Light/Dark pills. A fixed curtain falls in the next theme's chrome color, commits the persisted theme under full coverage, and rises. Each leg defaults to 550ms with cubic-bezier(0.76,0,0.24,1). Theme controls remain above the curtain. Development DialKit adds Theme Curtain → Duration Ms via
--theme-curtain-duration; removed effects remain absent. The overlay uses native Web Animations with matching scaleY functions to avoid singular-matrix interpolation jumps. Rapid clicks retarget the current rendered position and invalidate stale completions. Keyboard activation/T, reduced motion and unsupported APIs switch immediately; live reduced motion/hidden tabs settle the intended theme, storage synchronization cancels pending animation, and unmount cleans up animation/frame handles.
Validation: lint, TypeScript/webpack build, deterministic theme tests, the dedicated Chrome curtain suite and Phase 7 regression pass. Chrome confirms both directions, covered commits, rapid reversal, preserved text/colors/editor/focus, mobile resize, storage cancellation/failure and reduced-motion behavior. Development localhost:3000 exposes the new 550ms control and no obsolete specimen/ColorField controls.
Six browser-review corrections completed
Removed score and ColorField layout scaling/resizing, leaving immediate opening/closing and the WCAG/APCA numeral odometer. Specimen click now edits persistent plain text with a native caret, automatic font fitting and no visible editor box. Removed the Aa/circle toggle, Edit text button, and obsolete DialKit controls. Light actions use resolved Figma #F2F2F2 / #EBEBEB / #171717; EXPORT preserves the reference's explicitly dark #1A1A1A / #2E2E2E / #EDEDED style in both themes.
Validation before starting the subsequently requested theme curtain: lint, TypeScript, webpack build and Chrome Phase 7, Phase 6, annotations and full Phase 5/mobile-reveal suites passed with no console errors. Updated reveal assertions to the new immediate layout requirement. The earlier intensity-control entries below describe superseded behavior.
Manual ColorField click-motion tuning
At the user's request, exposed Color Field → Click Motion Amount in development DialKit. The root property
--color-field-motion-amountranges from 0 to 1 in 0.01 steps, defaulting to the existing full motion. Lower values reduce the remaining resize distance; zero makes ColorField size changes immediate. The controller seeks the non-scaling Flip timeline closer to its endpoint using the inverse quintic easing curve, then finishes on the existing timing. No scale deformation is reintroduced.Validation: lint, TypeScript/webpack build, manual numeric DialKit entry at localhost:3000, the Phase 7 Chrome suite and the complete Phase 5/editor-reveal suite pass with no console errors. Checks confirm reduced resize at 0.25, immediate opening at 0, unit-scale text/controls, interrupted field switches, cleanup, reduced motion and mobile reveal (51.5ms movement versus 184.8ms settlement). Production continues to omit DialKit; its preview was rebuilt and restarted.
ColorField squish removed after browser review
The user reported deformation/glitching in ColorField motion. Disabled Flip scaling for both fields and their descendants; expansion now resizes the actual boxes while text, swatches and controls retain unit scale. Other Phase 7 interactions retain their approved motion. Temporary size constraints are restored along with transform/opacity styles during interruption and cleanup.
Validation: lint, TypeScript/webpack build, the Phase 7 Chrome suite and the complete Phase 5/editor-reveal regression pass without console errors. The new browser check samples rendered transforms throughout opening, switching BG/FG and closing, confirming no squashing or stretching. Mobile reveal begins during expansion (53.1ms versus settlement at 186.4ms), and focus, gesture cancellation and short-viewport fit remain covered. The production preview at port 3001 was updated.
Phase 7 animation polish
Implemented the approved GSAP motion scope: interruptible specimen press/pop and Aa/circle rotation, layered photo crossfades with a pixelated tiny placeholder, coordinated Flip transitions for editors/thresholds/export, and programmatic slider-thumb easing that yields immediately to manual input. Preserved score-only WCAG/APCA odometer animation; hex values, editor readouts and slider numbers remain plain text. Added the ten root CSS motion parameters and a development DialKit panel alongside existing score timing controls.
Layout captures preserve current visual states during rapid reversal. Decorative inert exit copies let shells retain their natural dimensions, avoiding a late expansion jump and preserving mobile reveal during animation. Resize, live reduced motion and unmount clean up temporary styles/layers/listeners. Releasing outside the specimen cancels the pointer click while allowing the next keyboard activation.
Validation: lint, TypeScript, webpack production build, all deterministic suites, focused Phase 7 Chrome checks, Phase 6 Chrome checks, UI annotation checks and the complete Phase 5/reveal regression pass. Final Phase 5 rerun recorded no console errors and actual reveal movement at 52.0ms before settlement at 168.7ms. Earlier runs exposed a test measuring before the scheduled breakpoint Flip and a transient Chrome touch warning; the geometry test now waits for animation scheduling/settlement, and the complete diagnostic rerun passed without suppressing console errors. Development DialKit exposes all ten motion parameters, keyboard tuning updates CSS variables, and production omits the panel. Browser screenshots were inspected; physical-device feel for the new motion remains unverified.
Used
animateandemil-design-engfor implementation,find-animation-opportunitiesfor the scope audit andreact-best-practicesfor the changed React components. No extra text/typing animation was warranted. Phase 7 and the roadmap now record the implemented state; the continuous-resize work remains in Phase 8.Roadmap restructure: Phase 8 loose ends inserted
Inserted a new Phase 8 (Loose Ends & Hardening) and renumbered the native Swift phase from Phase 8 to Phase 9. The new phase collects deferred infrastructure work: CI (GitHub Actions running lint, typegen, tsc, build, and deterministic tests), Unsplash production access (implement download tracking via
links.download_location, apply for production approval per API guidelines — prerequisite for App Store release), dependency updates (npm auditreports 13 vulnerabilities), completing or dropping Plan 006 (responsive resize easing), README rewrite (currently create-next-app boilerplate), repository housekeeping (listing four merged branches for deletion and the dead homepage link for John to fix), device/browser testing documentation, and spec drift fixes (local fonts, URL typo, contrast-algorithm description, APCA grading labels).Added Phase 10 (App Store Launch) covering iOS (and optional macOS) App Store submission: Apple Developer Program enrollment (individual vs CO-OP Studio organization as open question), App Store Connect configuration, app metadata/screenshots/privacy policy, Unsplash attribution compliance, App Review guidelines risk check, TestFlight beta, submission/review/phased release, and post-launch operations (crash reporting, ratings prompt, versioning, support URL). Depends on Phase 9 (native app) and Phase 8 (Unsplash production access).
Phase 8 can run in parallel with or before Phase 7 (animation polish) — the ordering is left open for John to decide. All cross-references updated:
roadmap.md,progress.md,specs-context/spec-color-shift.md,phase-6-extended-input-layouts.md,phase-9-native-platforms.md, and the newphase-10-app-store-launch.md. No code changes.Drag-state motion polish
Changed the Figma drop target from an instant mount/unmount to an interruptible CSS transition. The card fades and scales from 97% over 200ms on entry and leaves in 150ms; the upload icon and guidance follow with 30ms/60ms delays. Photo credit and actions crossfade out while dragging. Reduced-motion mode removes all transforms and keeps a short opacity cue. The card stays mounted so rapid drag exits and reentries retarget from the visible state.
Validation: lint, TypeScript, webpack production build, the Phase 6 Chrome suite, and the complete Phase 5 Chrome regression suite pass with no console errors. The Phase 6 suite covers rapid reversal, retained DOM identity, reduced motion, photo import, export, and errors. Inspected the settled desktop drop state against the Figma frame.
Figma drag-and-drop state
Matched Source Photograph variant
3409:1053: the active drop target is inset from the photo, with a dashed gray border, dark translucent 5px blur, the original 32px upload SVG, and centered guidance listing accepted formats and the 20 MB limit. The photo credit and photo navigation controls hide while dragging and return on exit or drop. Mobile uses tighter spacing and type to fit its 240px preview.Validation: lint, TypeScript, webpack production build, and the Phase 6 Chrome suite pass. The suite checks the original SVG slot, blur, copy, desktop inset/icon geometry, hidden/returned controls, import, navigation, export, invalid-file handling, and initial API failure recovery. Inspected mobile and desktop drag-state screenshots against the Figma frame.
Phase 6 personal photo and specimen text
Implemented photo drag-and-drop in the existing photo panel. Supported local images are decoded and run through the browser palette extractor before insertion into photo history; invalid images receive a dismissible error. Personal photos display a local credit and export without Unsplash links. Object URLs are revoked when the app unmounts. Added inline specimen-text editing with Escape/focus handling and preserved text across photo navigation and circle toggling.
Validation: repository lint, TypeScript, webpack production build, and the focused Phase 6 Chrome suite passed. The complete Phase 5 Chrome regression suite passed on rerun; its first run hit a short-viewport timing assertion during rapid resize and passed that check on rerun. The current Phase 6 scope is complete for the web app; macOS support belongs to the native Phase 9 app.
Initial photo Retry recovery
Fixed the empty-buffer Retry path: Shuffle now selects the actual insertion index, so a successful retry after the initial photo request fails displays the recovered photo and resumes normal buffer refill. Added a deterministic Chrome regression that fails the first photo request and confirms the photo, credit, enabled controls, and error dismissal after Retry.
Validation passed: repository-wide lint, TypeScript, webpack production build, and the complete Phase 5 Chrome suite with no browser console errors. The user confirmed that the physical-device checks passed; device, OS, and browser details were not provided, so this is user-reported rather than automated-suite evidence. This supersedes the pending physical-device notes in earlier checkpoints.
Relocated controls and mobile duplicate removed
Implemented Figma frame
3396:999with Undo/Swap/Fix on the specimen, Previous/Shuffle/Next on the photo, and EXPORT alone in the sidebar. The same two control groups now remain visible over the 240px mobile preview; the former mobile disclosure menu and the separate full-photo Shuffle overlay are removed. Responsive button sizing, panel alignment, tooltips, keyboard focus, editor coordination, photo navigation, and export behavior remain covered. This checkpoint also includes the concurrent theme refinements to field tint, Light score colors, field labels, and selected threshold text.Final validation passed: repository-wide lint, TypeScript, webpack production build, three theme checks, six presence checks, eight responsive-motion checks, the complete Phase 5 Chrome suite, and the UI annotation Chrome suite. Browser checks covered widths 320-1440px, all six actions, mobile button count, export/clipboard, editor reveal, focus, and tooltip placement; console errors: none. The final 402px Dark screenshot was inspected. Physical iOS/Android keyboard and safe-area checks remain pending.
Next: confirm Phase 6 scope in
plan/phase-6-extended-input-layouts.mdbefore implementation. Keep the continuous-resize motion limitation and broader Phase 7 work separate.Session close and Phase 5 polish checkpoint
Closing the session with the revised mobile action capsule and progressive footer, compact intrinsic theme toggle, shared editor readout alignment, Figma tooltip styling (Dark
ds/gray/100/#1A1A1A, Light unchanged), left-side mobile tooltips and coordinated, interruptible editor reveal. Animation plan 007 is complete. This checkpoint includes the session's implementation, original Figma arrow assets, regression coverage and documentation; the other chat's loading-animation work remains separate.Final pre-commit checks reran repository-wide lint, TypeScript, three theme tests, six presence tests, eight responsive-motion tests and whitespace validation; all passed. Production builds and both Chrome suites passed during implementation, including the final tooltip checks after returning to
main; those results remain documented below and were not rerun for this documentation-only closure.Next session: confirm the scope of
plan/phase-6-extended-input-layouts.md. Before mobile release, verify software keyboards and safe-area behavior on physical iOS/Android devices. Keep plan 006's continuous-resize limitation separate; the 2D picker, swipe navigation, palette-tinted Light chrome and broader Phase 7 work remain deferred.Editor readout alignment and Figma tooltips
The format readout now reserves the same 74px label column as the color sliders, aligning the input start in HEX, RGB, HSL, HSB and OKLCH without changing input behavior. This uses the existing shared editor layout at all breakpoints, not a desktop-only override.
Vertical mobile PhotoActions controls and their disclosure trigger show tooltips on the left; inline desktop controls retain top placement. Figma tooltip component set
3396:988supplies Dark background#1A1A1A(ds/gray/100, updated fromds/gray/300) / text#EDEDEDand Light background#E5E5E5/ text#171717, 13px type with 16px line height, 12px horizontal and 8px vertical padding, and 6px corners. Original 14 x 6px arrow SVGs are stored locally and use Radix's side-aware placement; the Dark arrow was refreshed to match the updated token. Informational tooltips do not intercept clicks or use hoverable-content grace areas, preventing obstruction between adjacent controls.Validation: lint and webpack production build with TypeScript pass. The focused Chrome suite
tests/ui-annotations.browser.cjsverifies readout alignment in five formats at widths 2520/640/393/320, all six mobile tooltip positions and colors in both themes at 393/320, actual arrow loading/dimensions, neighboring action clicks, preserved desktop top placement, and no console errors. Inspected mobile Dark/Light tooltip and desktop editor screenshots.Coordinated mobile editor reveal
Replaced the editor reveal's settle timer and native smooth scroll with cancellable, frame-coalesced instant corrections that follow the existing 200ms opening / 150ms closing CSS morph. Both field shells, natural editor content, footer border geometry and visual viewport changes are observed. Manual wheel/touch interaction and input focus take priority; switching fields, closing and unmounting cancel stale work. Mobile breakpoint reentry and live reduced motion retain their existing state and focus behavior.
Combined original-checkout validation passed: webpack production build with TypeScript, lint, six presence tests, eight responsive-motion tests, three theme tests, the annotation suite and the complete Phase 5 Chrome suite all exited 0. Browser console errors were absent; actual scroll movement began at 57.1ms before shell settlement at 190.5ms. Coverage includes Escape after scrolling starts, unmount cleanup, trusted gesture cancellation, rapid switches, keyboard/reduced-motion behavior, all formats/themes, 320 x 320 top alignment and desktop no-scroll. Combined evidence is preserved in
/tmp/color-shift-007-combined. Physical keyboard and safe-area checks remain pending.Compact theme toggle and mobile editor reveal
Restored 4px vertical padding on the shared Light/Dark options and removed their 44px minimum dimensions at the user's request. The toggle is now an intrinsic-height pill on desktop and mobile; keyboard focus styling remains intact. This supersedes the earlier zero-padding/44px-target decision below.
Opening either color editor below 640px now reveals its expanded shell with automatic scrolling, leaving at least 16px above the measured fixed footer. A debounced ResizeObserver waits for expansion to settle and also handles format-driven height changes. Reduced motion uses instant scrolling, closing cancels pending work, and desktop page scrolling is unchanged. If the panel exceeds the available height, its top is aligned instead of attempting to fit an impossible full-panel view; normal scrolling still reaches the remaining controls. Existing focused-input keyboard handling is preserved.
Validation: repository-wide lint, TypeScript through the webpack production build, six presence tests, whitespace checks, and the expanded Chrome integration suite pass with no console errors. Automatic reveal was checked at 393 x 852 for both targets, all five formats, both themes, and both motion preferences, plus the oversized-panel fallback at 320 x 320 and no desktop page movement at 2520 x 1314. Inspected mobile editor and compact-toggle screenshots. Physical iOS/Android keyboard and safe-area checks remain pending.
Mobile action capsule and progressive footer updated
Implemented the revised
ControlMobilecomponent set (3389:788) from Figma. Its open state now uses one 48 x 310px capsule with shared theme fill/border, six transparent 46 x 48px controls, and 4px gaps. Action order, disabled states, editor target, Escape/outside dismissal, focus transfer, and short-viewport scrolling remain intact; desktop controls are unchanged.Applied the two browser annotations through the shared theme-button style: vertical padding is zero while 44px touch targets remain. Inspected Dark/Light footer nodes
3387:343and3389:891; removed the top divider and added the transparent-to-theme gradient and a masked-layer approximation of progressive background blur below 640px. Decorative layers do not intercept input or clip floating actions. Solid chrome is the fallback for unsupported blur/masks and reduced-transparency preference.Fixed keyboard-open focus timing by focusing after the disclosure content commits, and stopped outside-click editor dismissal from scheduling a competing focus restoration. Escape still restores the editor's field focus. Lint, TypeScript, webpack production build, the six presence tests, and the expanded Chrome integration suite pass. Browser checks include ten widths, exact capsule geometry, all six actions, export, keyboard focus, short viewports, and reduced transparency; console errors: none. Dark/Light screenshots and a separate 393 x 852 touch check were inspected. Physical iOS/Android keyboard and safe-area checks remain pending.
Session close and Phase 6 handoff
Closing this session with the Phase 5 implementation, its regression tests, and the updated phase/roadmap/product documentation. The checkpoint also includes the parallel photo improvements: randomized abstract queries, 2400px display images at quality 90, the matching Next image quality configuration, and the non-deprecated image preload prop. Existing work from the other chat was preserved.
Final pre-commit checks reran repository-wide lint, TypeScript, the three theme checks, six presence tests, eight responsive-motion tests, and whitespace validation; all passed. The webpack production build and browser integration evidence are recorded in the Phase 5 entry below and were not rerun for this documentation-only closure.
Next session: start from
plan/phase-6-extended-input-layouts.mdafter confirming its scope. Before mobile release, verify software keyboard and safe-area behavior on physical iOS/Android devices. Keep the known continuous-resize easing limitation and the observed intermittent Unsplash 403 separate from the completed Phase 5 browser checks. The 2D picker, swipe navigation, and palette-tinted Light chrome remain deferred.Phase 5 implemented and browser-verified
Implemented the confirmed mobile Figma layout and neutral Light theme. The accessible header toggle and guarded
Tshortcut persist explicit preference, resolve it before paint, and tolerate blocked browser storage. Semantic tokens cover chrome and all contrast score states; theme changes retain photos, colors, editor state, thresholds, history, and export.Mobile now keeps the 240px side-by-side preview and 48px Aa above scrolling score/color controls. EXPORT and a 48px floating trigger stay in a fixed, measured footer with safe-area support. The six-action stack preserves the editor target, closes independently on Escape/outside interaction, supports short-viewport scrolling, and restores focus after selection. At 640px it transfers focus to the corresponding inline action. Separating the keyed export slot from the action controls prevents async Shuffle/photo updates from discarding focus. The enlarged 44px theme targets and deferred 2D picker remain intentional differences from the compact Figma reference.
Validation: full
npm run lint, npx tsc --noEmit --incremental false, andnpx next build --webpackpass. Three theme checks, six presence-hook tests, and eight responsive-motion tests pass. The new production Chrome integration suite verifies widths 320/390/402/639/640/1024/1179/1180/1360, all six actions, active-target Fix/Swap, history, menu/editor coordination, Escape, keyboard focus, persistence/blocked storage, score grades/APCA, actual clipboard and Markdown download, export errors, short viewports, reduced motion, input reachability, and circle geometry. Its photo API is deterministic while image rendering and palette extraction use a real bitmap. Browser console errors: none. Commands and limitations are documented intests/README.md.A separate coarse-pointer/mobile Chrome check rendered a real Unsplash image with credit and an 8.81:1 AAA pair. The normal initial request first received an upstream 403; a subsequent local API request returned 200, and the live browser smoke used real API responses limited to one photo per request. No Unsplash configuration was changed as part of this phase; the parallel photo-quality/query changes were preserved. Production preview is on port 3001, avoiding development tools that overlap mobile actions on port 3000.
Physical iOS Safari/Android Chrome software-keyboard and notch/safe-area checks are still pending. The existing Turbopack process/port sandbox restriction required the webpack fallback, and continuous-resize animation cancellation remains outside Phase 5. The next implementation milestone is Phase 6; do not interpret browser verification as physical-device certification.
Phase 5 mobile design and scope verified
Inspected updated Figma frames
3387:311and3387:482, shorter 402 x 874 viewport references, andControlMobilevariants3389:788. The 96px footer now places EXPORT beside a 48px trigger. The open variant reveals a vertical stack ordered Undo, Shuffle, Swap, Fix, Previous, Next. Preview stays side by side at 240px high with 48px Aa; score and inline editing belong to scrolling page content. Figma has no configured trigger reactions, so dismissal/focus behavior is recorded as implementation defaults. The user confirmed white/neutral Light chrome and deferring the 2D picker; swipe was already deferred. Rewrote
plan/phase-5-theming-responsive.mdwith source nodes, floating actions, editor/export coordination, accessibility, safe-area/keyboard handling, theme defaults, implementation sequence, and verification. Updated roadmap and current product-spec mobile references. This supersedes older handoff references to tinted chrome, a bottom sheet, and original preview proportions. Phase 5 is planned, not implemented; no application files changed and no application tests were rerun for this documentation work.Follow-up: all five lint errors corrected
Corrected the five hook-rule errors recorded at the session handoff: two render-time ref accesses in
color-fields.tsx, its effect-driven presence and format/hue resets, and the effect-driven threshold presence inscore.tsx. Editor exit content is now cached in state, and format/hue resets use guarded prop-change state updates. The sharedlib/use-collapsible-presence.tshook retains content until the closing grid transition ends, ignores bubbled/unrelated transition events, and subscribes to live reduced-motion preferences throughuseSyncExternalStoreinstead of synchronous state updates in effects. No lint rules were disabled to accept the application code.Validation: the repository-wide
npm run lintandnpx tsc --noEmit --incremental falsepassed. All six new deterministic presence-hook tests and the eight existing responsive-motion tests passed. Live browser checks confirmed editor/score opening and closing, closing-content removal, HSL preservation when switching targets, HEX reset on reopening, Escape focus restoration, and no browser warnings/errors. Reduced-motion changes and server-side window isolation were tested with mocks, not browser emulation. No production build was rerun. This follow-up commit includes the corrections, the new hook and tests, and the five previously untracked plans in
.cursor/plansas historical planning records. Those older plans describe their original implementation targets; this progress log andplans/README.mddescribe the current state, including the later removal of editor odometers. The preceding session was pushed asd152260. Phase 5 remains the next milestone: start fromplan/phase-5-theming-responsive.md. The continuous-resize animation limitation below is unchanged.Editor polish, development tools, and Phase 5 handoff
Removed the slider track border that produced a white dot at its starting edge. Removed odometer overlays from all color-editor channel inputs and the format readout; values now remain plain editable text with consistent 12px monospace typography when idle, focused, or typing. The score odometer remains animated. Slider/readout rows now have 8px right padding, and the score description uses its natural height.
Installed Agentation and integrated it into the root layout for development only. It starts automatically with
npm run dev; feedback is copied into chat, with no automatic MCP feedback synchronization configured. Integrated DialKit and its Motion dependency as development controls for score-odometer duration, digit stagger, and reveal duration. Runtime timing overrides apply only in development; production uses the existing defaults.Replaced the desktop minimum-width constraint with a basic responsive fallback: controls and preview stack below 1180px, and specimen/photo stack below 640px. Adjusted specimen sizes, photo sizing hints, credit wrapping, and scrolling for narrow screens. This is groundwork, not completion of Phase 5's mobile design.
Added scoped GSAP Flip breakpoint transitions in
lib/use-responsive-layout-motion.ts: 200ms motion at the 640px/1180px boundaries, translation-only controls, separate specimen press transforms, circle counter-scaling, reduced-motion handling, and owned-style cleanup. Known limitation, not fixed: the next same-band resize cancels an active transition, so normal continuous window dragging makes the easing nearly invisible. Retargeting from the visible state needs follow-up; animation plan 006 is marked PARTIAL rather than complete.Validation at session close:
npx tsc --noEmit --incremental falsepassed; ESLint passed on changed TS/TSX files other thanscore.tsx, plus the test harness; all eight deterministic responsive-motion tests passed withnode tests/responsive-layout-motion.test.cjs.npm run lintstill reports five pre-existing hook-rule errors incomponents/control-bar/color-fields.tsx(four) andcomponents/control-bar/score.tsx(one); these were left unchanged. Earlier live browser checks covered both breakpoints, rapid reversals, circle roundness, editor/content changes, a scrolled crossing, and widths 1360, 1180, 1179, 1024, 640, 639, 390, and 320 without settled horizontal overflow or browser console errors. Reduced-motion changes and unmount cleanup were verified with mocks only. No production build was rerun this session.Next chat: Phase 5. Phases 1-4 remain complete. Start from
plan/phase-5-theming-responsive.mdand confirm the remaining draft details/mobile Figma design before implementation. Remaining work includes the palette-tinted Light/Dark theme, accessible toggle andTshortcut, theme crossfade, mobile bottom-sheet controls, and defined mobile editor/score behavior while preserving existing workflows. DialKit and a focused Flip use are already present, but broader Phase 7 photo crossfade, TubeText, specimen motion, and layout polish remain pending. Preserve the editor's non-animated numeric inputs and account for the resize limitation above.Control bar motion and contrast chrome completed
Committed the control-bar motion and visual pass in
53a21f8(feat: animate the control bar and match contrast chrome). Color editors now expand inside their active color fields with a consistent shell radius, and GSAP odometers animate the score and editor readouts with short durations, retargeting, and reduced-motion handling. Updated format tabs, sliders, score states, and threshold pills to match the Figma contrast chrome.Completed animation plans 001–005 in
plans/README.md: color-field radius consistency, shorter odometer motion, named IconButton transitions with press feedback, a CSS threshold accordion, and export progress/entrance motion. EXPORT now uses a transform-based progress fill and a shorter loading sequence; its button chrome matches the other sidebar controls.Phases 1–4 remain complete. Phase 7 still owns photo crossfade, TubeText, specimen squish/pop, GSAP Flip, and DialKit. The next roadmap milestone is Phase 5 (
plan/phase-5-theming-responsive.md): Light/Dark theming and the responsive mobile bottom-sheet layout.Recorded this entry on 2026-10-01 after checking the commit and completed plan statuses. No application tests or browser checks were rerun for this documentation update; the Phase 4 lint note below describes the state at that earlier milestone.
Phase 4 Markdown export completed
Implemented the approved export component from Figma node
3377:327. The sidebar keeps the six photo controls visible while the full-width EXPORT button moves through the two progress-bar loading states and then replaces itself, in the same slot, with COPY and DOWNLOAD .MD. The local row, progress, and success-label transitions respect reduced-motion preferences; COPY and DOWNLOAD both show their check-mark confirmation for 1.5 seconds before restoring EXPORT.Both actions use one shared Markdown generator. Its payload includes background and foreground in HEX, RGB, HSL, HSB, and OKLCH; WCAG 2 and APCA scores with grades; and linked Unsplash credit. Downloads use the approved
color-shift-<background-hex>-<foreground-hex>.mdfilename. Added accessible expanded, disabled, focus, and live-status behavior, and reset the export state whenever the active photo or color pair changes.Validated the new files with ESLint and the full project with TypeScript and a Next.js 16 webpack production build. Live browser checks covered both loading stages, the in-place EXPORT replacement, COPY/COPIED, DOWNLOAD/DOWNLOADED, the 1.5-second reset, Escape dismissal, persistent photo controls, and a clean browser console. The repository-wide lint command still reports pre-existing hook-rule violations in the uncommitted animation work in
color-fields.tsxandscore.tsx; the Phase 4 files pass lint.Phase 3 dual scoring and thresholds completed
Implemented the approved contrast result from Figma frame
3359:1577. The score tile now switches between WCAG 2 and APCA, matches the six good/meh/bad visual states, shows APCA as unsignedLcwhile retaining its signed polarity internally, and exposes algorithm-specific descriptions and thresholds. Each algorithm remembers its own selected level (WCAG 4.5 and APCA 60 by default) across photos, while a separate dot identifies the level nearest to the live score.Clicking the score body expands the four thresholds. A threshold click adjusts the open editor's color, or the foreground by default, to that exact level even when doing so lowers a stronger pair. The OKLCH search preserves APCA polarity and falls back to the maximum available contrast when a target cannot be reached. Score interactions keep the active editor target intact;
Escapeand outside clicks collapse the thresholds.Filled the reserved action-row slot with the wrench control. It moves the active color only when the pair is below the selected threshold, becomes disabled once the pair passes, and records one undo step. Validated foreground and background adjustments, exact WCAG/APCA targets, per-algorithm threshold memory, photo persistence, Fix/no-op behavior, Undo availability, panel dismissal, and the WCAG/APCA layouts in the live browser. ESLint, TypeScript, and the Next.js 16 webpack production build pass.
Phase 2 color editing completed
Implemented the approved editor panel from Figma frame
3359:1654. Clicking either color row now opens an accessible sidebar editor with HEX, RGB, HSL, HSB, and OKLCH tabs; per-channel gradient sliders; editable numeric values; and a format-aware readout. All formats round-trip throughculori, HSB input is parsed explicitly, alpha colors are rejected, and OKLCH chroma is capped to the current lightness/hue's sRGB gamut with a binary search.Color changes update the field rows, specimen, and WCAG score live. The readout accepts valid HEX/RGB/HSL/HSB/OKLCH input and preserves the last valid color with an inline error for invalid input. The panel switches cleanly between background and foreground, follows the color through swap, closes on outside click or
Esc, restores focus to its color row, and avoids collisions between global photo shortcuts and focused tabs, sliders, fields, links, or buttons.Added a per-photo undo stack with the reserved action-row button and
Cmd/Ctrl+Z. Numeric/readout edits and swaps create discrete entries; a complete pointer or keyboard slider gesture creates one entry; and previous, next, or shuffle resets history. Validated with ESLint, a production webpack build, and live browser checks covering all five tabs, valid and invalid readouts, real-time score changes, slider keyboard editing, button and shortcut undo,Escfocus restoration, shortcut isolation, swap, and history reset on photo navigation. No browser errors or framework overlay were observed.Phase 1 core loop completed
Implemented the full photo-driven loop from the approved Phase 1 spec. The app now proxies the Unsplash random-photo API through
/api/photos, normalizes attribution-safe photo data, keeps a ten-photo buffer with automatic refill, and extracts six named swatches client-side withnode-vibrant. The color engine ranks palette pairs, computes WCAG contrast withculori, and reuses a generic OKLCHbumpToContrast(color, against, target)binary search to guarantee a minimum 4.5:1 ratio.Rebuilt the static Figma mock as the atomic sidebar architecture (
ControlContainer,Score,ColorFields,ControlsBar,IconButton,CSButton,Swatch, and the future-facingTubeTextinterface), backed by shadcn/ui primitives and semantic dark-theme tokens. Added the full specimen/photo experience, Aa/circle toggle, previous/next navigation, Space shuffle,Sswap, photographer attribution, loading skeletons, inline retry errors, remote image configuration, and the shared Phase 1 data shapes.Validated with ESLint, a production webpack build, and a live browser run against the configured Unsplash key. Eleven sampled photos all rendered at AA or AAA contrast (observed range 5.16–9.10), keyboard interactions and random injection worked, and the API log confirmed automatic buffer refill near the end. The default Turbopack production build remains affected by the environment's process/port sandbox limitation; the webpack production build passes.
Closed Phase 1's forward-compatibility gaps
Audited whether Phase 1 sets up everything later phases depend on, and found three real gaps: the control bar wasn't required to follow the original spec's atomic component architecture (risking a refactor once sliders/threshold row/export panel get added in Phases 2–4), chrome colors weren't specified as semantic tokens (Phase 5's light theme would mean restyling instead of a token swap), and
apca-w3wasn't in the Phase 1 dependency list. Fixed all three inphase-1-core-loop.md: Phase 1 now buildsControlContainer/ControlsBaras a state-driven structure (only thedefaultstate used,score/exportstates andThresholdButtons/ExportPanel/ColorMode/ColorSliderscomponents added later without touching Phase 1's code), chrome colors are defined as CSS custom property tokens from day one, andapca-w3gets installed in Phase 1 even though unused until Phase 3. Also generalized the auto-bump logic into a reusablebumpToContrast(color, against, target)function so Phase 3's threshold bumping wraps it instead of reimplementing the binary search.Moved Animation Polish to the end of the web phases
Reordered the roadmap so Animation Polish comes after all other web-feature phases (Color Editing, Dual Scoring, Export, Theming/Responsive, Extended Input & Layout Modes) instead of sitting in the middle at old Phase 5. Reasoning unchanged from the original doc — animation shouldn't be fought for while interactions are still taking shape — but the user wanted it pushed further out, past theming and extended input too, so it's now Phase 7 (Native Platforms stays Phase 8, still a separate Swift/SwiftUI track). Renamed/renumbered
phase-5-animation-polish.md→phase-7-animation-polish.md, shifted the old Phase 6 (theming) and Phase 7 (extended input) down to 5 and 6, and fixed every cross-reference inphase-2throughphase-4,phase-6,phase-8, androadmap.md.Also added a requirement to the animation phase: implement it using the animation skill set from emilkowalski/skills that the user just added to their account (
animate,emil-design-eng,animation-vocabulary,find-animation-opportunities,improve-animations) — these guide *how* to build each animation well, layered on top of the GSAP tool choice the original spec already locked in, not replacing it.Named the phase files
Renamed
plan/phase-2.mdthroughplan/phase-8.mdto include a short descriptive slug (e.g.phase-2-color-editing.md,phase-8-native-platforms.md) so the filenames are legible on their own without openingroadmap.mdfirst.phase-1.mdbecamephase-1-core-loop.md. Updated the cross-references inroadmap.mdto match;stretch.mdwas left as-is since it already reads fine unnumbered.Phase 1 spec written, full roadmap drafted
Interviewed to reconcile the ambitious
specs-context/spec-color-shift.md(which describes the whole product as if built) against the actual codebase (a blankcreate-next-appscaffold). Decided the first real milestone is a Phase 1 spec: prove the core loop of Unsplash photo → node-vibrant color extraction → auto-AA-bumped bg/fg pair → full-scale specimen, with photo navigation, Aa/circle toggle, swap, and a WCAG-only score pill. Deliberately scoped out sliders, threshold bumping, APCA, export, GSAP polish, light theme, and mobile — those are pushed to later phases so Phase 1 stays buildable and testable on its own.Wrote the whole thing down in a new
plan/folder so the project can be picked up in a future session without re-deriving scope:phase-1.mdhas the approved Phase 1 spec plus the scoping decisions made along the way, roadmap.mdindexes Phases 2–8 (color editing → dual scoring/thresholds → export → animation polish → theming/responsive → extended input & layout modes → native iOS/macOS) plus a Figma-export stretch goal, andphase-2.mdthroughphase-8.md/stretch.mdsketch each phase at a draft level. Ordering and detail-level for Phases 2+ are explicitly still open questions, logged inroadmap.md.Added to Phase 1 scope: build the split-screen/control-bar layout directly from the existing Figma file (
Color-Shift, keyFu0DGoLsLeY6wj7oLr5cVh) rather than freehand from the style guide text. Checked the file via the Figma MCP tools and found thenode-idcurrently on record only resolves to a thumbnail/cover frame (900×540 placeholder image), not the real UI screen — this is now a flagged blocker inphase-1.md§7, need the correct frame-specific link before implementation can start.Nothing implemented yet — this session was entirely spec/planning work. Next session should either resolve the Figma frame link and start Phase 1 build, or continue refining the Phase 2+ roadmap open questions first.
